The Sport Corner Siam Hockey League News Week 12 – February 11 – February 17, 2018

Week 12 had 2 nights of games.

In our first night on February 11, 2018 at 8:30, we had the Sukhumvit Spitfires going head to head with Aware. This game saw lots of actions with the scoring going back and forth. The first goal, by the Spitfires was scored by Harrison “Ace” Oztemel. the second and third went to Aware, which were scored by Ollie “Ragnarok” Moyse and Corry Day. In the second period, we had 2 goals by the Spitfires, the first one from Scott Murray and the second from Oztemel, and one goal from Aware, which was by Yean Thanakroekkiat. The goalies sealed the nets down in the third period to finish regular time 3-3 to force the first 3-on-3 of this season. Neither team allowed to many scoring opportunities and and the overtime frame ended still tied at 3 to force a sudden death shootout. The first five shooters for both teams couldn’t get one past either goaltender. The Aware captain, Patrik Lundback scored in his try and the Spitfires captain, Brad “Big Daddy” Wilson was stopped by Patrick Leduc to give Aware another win. The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to the Spitfires netminder for stopping 41 of 44 shots.

In our second game of the night on February 11, 2018, we had the battle for third place, Hertz facing off against Expedia. Hertz was ready for this one and scored 5 minutes into the game. Expedia didn’t tie it up until there were 2 seconds left in the first period. Both teams scored goals in the second period, but Hertz scored 2 goals in the third to give themselves a tenuous hold on third place. The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Kim Lidberg for his 2 goals on the night.

Winning & losing streaks broken as SHL season winds down

With twenty-three players missing in total (six each from AWARE, Sukhumvit & Expedia; and five from Hertz) due to injury, other commitments or visits to Pyeongchang to watch the Winter Olympics, SHL management was sent scrambling in search of replacement players on February 15th. Patrick Forstner, Stephen Sproule, Top Rutthapong and Benoit Hardy-Chartrand all pulled double-duty on the night, subbing in both games and Alistair Boulton got his first taste of SHL action, subbing in the first game for AWARE, while Ichiro Hara also subbed for Expedia in game one. A big thank you goes out all these players for allowing each SHL team to meet their minimum player requirement thereby avoiding forfeit.

AWARE wins 6-round shootout and Hertz jumps into third

The first game on February 11th was the most exciting of the season so far with AWARE extending their winning streak to a record eleven games as they beat the Sukhumvit Spitfires 4-3 in a six-round shootout with AWARE captain, Patrik Lundback, the SHL’s best player, fittingly scoring the winning goal in the shoot-out, as a four-minute three-on-three session overtime failed to produce a victor.

The game was back and forth all evening with Sukhumvit taking a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a goal by Harrison Oztemel before AWARE scored twice on markers by Olly Moyse and Corry Day taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Scott Murray and Harrison Oztemel, with his second of the night, staked the Spitfires to a 3-2 lead midway through the second and then Yean Thanakroekkiat, with one of his patented blasts, tied it at three heading into the second intermission. There were plenty of chances on both sides in the third, but both goalies (the Spitfires’ Dream Ungkulpattanasuk and AWARE’s Patrick Leduc) were outstanding, turning away opportunity after opportunity.

The Sport Corner Siam Hockey League News Week 11 – February 04 – February 10, 2018

In our first game of the night, at 8:30, we had Expedia facing off against the Sukhumvit Spitfires. In this game, these two teams really fought it out, and late in the first period, the Spitfires found the back of the net with a goal by Ernesto Bauer, which was assisted by Adrian Meyers. The second period saw these two teams deadlocked with the score still 1-0 at the end of the second period. The third period saw both Expedia tie it up with a goal by Jordan Ashton, which was assisted by Stephen Sproule. The Spitfires took the lead again with a goal by Patrick Forstner, which was assisted by Michael White and Adrian Meyers. The Spitfires increased their lead to 2 when Tan Limpinphet, with Adrian Meyers getting his third assist fo the night. A minute later Expedia scored again to make it 3-2, but they just couldn’t finish it off. The final score of the game was the Spitfires 3, Expedia 2 with Expedia having a slight edge in shots 33-27.

Expedia loses a tough one; Aware powers on

In our first game of SHL action on February 4th, we had Expedia facing off against the Sukhumvit Spitfires. Expedia just can’t seem to find a way to get into the win column, having lost their last eight games.

The first period saw lots of action, with plenty of shots on net, but both netminders were on their game, not letting anything by them until there were just over three minutes left in the first period when Adrian Meyers hit Ernesto Bauer with a pass, and Bauer put the puck past Yves Gaboriault.

Week 10 games were on January 28th this week.

In our first game, at 8:30, we had Hertz vs the Sukhumvit Spitfires. Hertz came out on ready to go in this one and scored the only 2 goals in the first period, but the Spitfires came back in the second period, scoring 4 unanswered goals to finish the second period ahead of Hertz with a score of 4-2. The final period saw Hertz trying to mount a last period come back with an early goal, but the Spitfires scored 2 more goals with Spitfires’ captain, Brad “Big Daddy” Wilson scoring an empty netter to finish off the game. The final score of the game was 6-3 for the Spitfires. The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Wilson for his goal and outstanding play in both the offensive and defensive zones.

AWARE clinches first place overall

Sukhumvit’s Harrison Oztemel and Hertz’s Mike Triacca race for the puck.

In the last weekend of January, AWARE stretched its win streak to nine, with a 7-4 victory over Expedia, thereby clinching first place overall in the 2017-18 Sport Corner Siam Hockey League season.

But prior to that game, the Sukhumvit Spitfires claimed second place overall with a 6-3 victory over Hertz. In that contest, Hertz came out looking to build on last game’s win with a pair of goals in the first period from Brandon Vick, but they just weren’t able to capitalize on the early lead.

In the second period, we saw Hertz slow down as the Sukhumvit Spitfires started to soar. Substitute player Tim Suphankomut scored Spitfires first goal just two minutes into the second period after he received a pass from Adrian Meyers. With five minutes left in the second period, the Spitfires scored three quick goals: first, an unassisted tally by Chanokchon “Tan” Limpinphet; second, Araya “Ith” Vatanapanyakul scored assisted by Suphankomut; and third, Michael White scored with just 15 seconds left in the period assisted by Limpinphet and Gary Cosby.

The Sport Corner Siam Hockey League News Week 9 – January 21-27, 2018

Our 9th week of games started off on January 21st.

In our first game we had Aware facing off against Hertz. Hertz did a great job of keeping the game close by only allowing 1 goal in the first period and 2 more by the end of the second period. Early in the third period saw Hertz really fighting to try and make a come back an scoring 2 goals, but Aware were just 2 much for them, scoring 4 more goals in the third period to finish the game 7-2. The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Ollie Moyse.

Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game Justin St. Denis of Hertz – January 25, 2018

In our first game of the night on January 25, at 8:30, we had Expedia facing off against Hertz. They have faced each other 4 times so far this year, with both teams each winning 2 games. When both teams took the ice, you could see that they were both ready to go. This game went back and forth with Hertz finally coming out on top with a score of 6-5. The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Justin St. Denis for his 2 goals and his terrific play in both the offensive and defensive zones.
