Game 9 – 8th Jan 2017

It was the first week back after the Christmas/New Year’s break (week five of SHL action) and in game one the Sukhumvit Spitfires set out to avenge a 7-0 drubbing to AWARE in week 3 of SHL action. And the Spitfires did just that defeating AWARE 5-4 in the SHL’s first 3-on-3 overtime finish.

After winning the first game they played, Sukhumvit has struggled losing Geoff McIntyre, the second overall pick, to a season-ending injury. But it looks like they have found his replacement in Manitoba-born Donny Kerfoot, who razzled and dazzled on the second night scoring two goals and an assist, and beautifully setting up David Boere’s game-winning goal.

Donny was the Rolling Stone Pizza player of the game for his three-point effort. Arnupap “Ob” Charoenrak, Scott Murray and David Boere also scored for Sukhumvit. while Darren Boodle turned in quite the performance for AWARE popping in a hat-trick with Devin Michael adding a goal and assist for AWARE as well.

Ironically, Lance Parker was in net for AWARE the last two times these teams played, substituting for Yves Gaboriault. On this night, however, he was substituting for the Spitfires’  Jason Cotsmire, and he earned the win again stopping 17 of the shots he faced, while Yves Gaboriault, back in the twines for AWARE stopped 23 of the 28 shots he faced.

Both teams now have identical 2-3 records but AWARE has two overtime losses and as they gained a point in each loss they sit in third place ahead of Sukhumvit in the standing with six points compared to the Spitfires’ four.

All teams iced ten players on the night as many of the Thai players in the league had a national team practice they had to attend.  League action continues at “the Rink”, Central Grand Rama 9, on Sunday January 15th with AWARE taking on Hooters at 8:30 and Sukhumvit facing off against Sport Corner/Titanium at 9:30.
