Two close games as SHL teams battle it out in week 8 action

With only a few days’ rest, SHL teams were back at it in the league’s first Thursday night contest (Jan 26th) as Sport Corner-Titanium took on Hooters Nana in game one, while the Sukhumvit Spitfires faced AWARE in the evening’s second match.

 

In game one, substitute Tom Price, who has been battling the flu, turned in a splendid performance for SC-Titanium scoring two goals while Mike Wilson added a pair of assists for SC-Titanium, giving him nine points on the season and earning him the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award. With five minutes left in the game, Joe Lamantia scored the winning, and his first, goal of the season, on a disputed play with many AWARE players claiming the puck did not cross the line. But the goal stood and minutes later Jari Eerikainen netted the clincher for SC-Titanium sealing their victory.     

Brandon Vick continued to play his hot hand scoring two goals for AWARE on the night, Darren Boodle added AWARE’s other tally and Devin Michael had two helpers for his team. Yves Gaboriault made 23 saves of the 28 shots he faced for AWARE, while Gabor Toth stopped 17 of the 20 shots fired his way for the winning SC-Titanium team.

In game two, James Cox stepped in to replace regular Hooters goalie Pattarapol “Dream” Angkulpattanasuk (lost to the Thai national team) making him the fourth keeper to lace up the pads for Hooters this year, while Lance Parker continued to replace the injured Jason Cotsmire in the Sukhumvit net. Lance did such a good job on the night, stopping 28 of the 31 shots he faced, that he was named the Rolling Stone Player of the Game. James had a tougher time at the other end of the rink stopping 28 of the 36 shots fired his way.  

Darius Konotpetz made quite a debut for Sukhumvit scoring two goals on his first shift of the game, narrowly missing a hat-trick (later in the game he added an assist as well). Dugal Monk scored on a beautiful end-to-end rush and added three assists for Sukhumvit and Harrison Oztemel added a goal and two assists. Krittapad “Peam” Jarawuttipreeda, Adrian Meyers, Jason Bitter and Ernesto Bauer also scored for the Spitfires. For Hooters, Andy Brine and Paul Stoddart had a goal and assist each, while Top Rutthapong scored for the second straight week and Stephen Sproule chipped in with two assists.

John Schachnovsky’s assist on Jari Eerikainen’s goal on his final shift of the night enabled him to keep his point streak alive at nine games. Up until that time, John had been shut down by the dynamic Swedish defensive duo of Patrik Lundbach and Christian Olofsson.   

John sits atop the SHL leader board with fourteen goals and nine assists. He is followed by Hooters Paul Stoddart and AWARE’s Brandon Vick, who are tied for second with eight goals and three assists each. SC’s Zak Garofolo and Hooters Stephen Sproule are next up, tied for third, with four goals and seven assists each.

SC-Titanium continues to occupy the SHL penthouse with fourteen points and a 7-2 record. Hooters Nana is tied for second with Sukhumvit; they both have identical 4-5-1 records with nine points each. AWARE also has nine points but sits in last place with a 3-6-3 as they have the fewest wins (the third number in sequence stands for overtime losses, where a point is gained by the losing team).  

SHL action continues Sunday November 5th at “the Rink”, Central Grand Rama 9, with the Sukhumvit Spitfires taking on AWARE at 8:30 and SC-Titanium battling Hooters Nana at 9:30pm.

Hooters Nana made it a family affair replacing their regular goalie Pattarapol “Dream” Angkulpattanasuk with his sister Wasunun “Pop” Angkulpattanasuk. Pop pitted her skills against the cagey Russian goalie Gabor Toth, who was tending the twines for Sport Corner-Titanium: they both ended up making 24 saves on the night. It was a very close game with a 3-3 score going into the final minutes before Sport Corner-Titanium pulled away winning the match 5-3.

Scoring-wise it was the “Schachnovsky-Garofolo show” again with John picking up a hat-trick and assist for the second straight game and Zak chipping in two assists. Mike Wilson was also a force to be reckoned with as he picked up a goal and two assists for SC-Titanium (he now has seven points on the season). Remo Nyfenegger scored their other goal, earning his fourth marker of the year. On the Hooters side, Sebastien Ranger (3rd), Top Rutthapong (1st) and Paul Stoddart (6th) each tallied single scores. For his efforts, John Schachnovsky became the first player in SHL history to receive the Rolling Stone Pizza player of the game award twice.

Yves Gaboriault was the Rolling Stone Pizza player of the second game – no doubt about it – his team was outshot 34-15, but with one spectacular save after another, he kept AWARE in the game until the dying seconds of overtime when Garrett Howden rammed a second rebound past him to clinch the victory for Sukhumvit. Donny Kerfoot continued to light the lamp and remind people while he played at such a high level when he was a junior as he bagged Sukhumvit’s two regulation-time goals and seemed to be all over the ice. Brandon Vick and Sebastien Verdy scored for AWARE with their sixth and second goals of the season, respectively. Sebastien also added an assist on the night. John Schachnovsky’s hot hand enabled him to keep his spot atop the SHL leader board with fourteen goals and eight assists. He is followed by teammate Zak Garofolo with four goals and seven assists. Next up is AWARE’s Patrik Lundback with 3 goals and 7 assists. Hooters teammates Paul Stoddart and Stephen Sproule are in fourth and fifth spot, respectively, with Stoddart potting seven goals and two assists and Sproule earning four goals and two assists.

SC-Titanium continues to sit atop the league standings with twelve points and a 5-2 record. Hooters Nana is in second spot with a 4-4-1 record and nine points; AWARE is third with a 3-5-3 record and 8 points, while Sukhumvit sits in last place with a 3-5-1 record for seven points (the third number in sequence stands for overtime losses, where a point is gained by the losing team).

League action continues this Sunday January 29th at “the Rink”, Central Grand Rama 9, with SC-Titanium taking on AWARE at 8:30 and Sukhumvit battling Hooters Nana at 9:30pm.

Week 9 SHL action saw Sport Corner-Titanium defeat AWARE 5-3 in game one, while the Sukhumvit Spitfires beat Hooters Nana 8-3 in the evening’s second contest.
