2020 starts with a bang as AWARE and Novotel earn convincing wins

Our first game in 2020 saw AWARE thump Hertz 6-2. The first period was a goaltending battle with several chances at each end. Early in the second period, AWARE captain Justin St. Denis snatched up a loose puck after Hertz’s Tan Limpinphet fell and snuck a low backhander through a screen and under Hertz keeper Lance Parker as Brandon Vick and Devin Michael caused havoc in front of the net.

On the same shift, seconds later, St. Denis gave Michael a cross-ice pass breaking into the zone and he ripped a high slapshot over Lance’s shoulder. The very next shift, Vick chipped the puck up the boards to St. Denis who feed Micheal up the middle; he undressed the defender and Lance before slipping it into the empty net giving AWARE a 3-0 heading into the second intermission.

Week 10 News

On January 12, 2020 in our first game of the night, we had the Aware going head to head with Hertz. Aware got a much needed win in this game and totally dominated Hertz in this 6-2 win. Aware had goals from captain, Justin St-Denis, Corry Day, Matt Johnson, David Boere and two by Devin Michael to earn himself the Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game.

In our second game of the night, at 9:30 we had our number one teams, PEAK Biolabs and the Novotel Spitfires, facing off against each other. Novotel crushed PEAK 6-1 in this one with goals from sub, Tom Price, Brad Wilson, Peam Jaratwuttipreeda, Marcel Bouwens and two from Bill Bredesen. The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Novotel’s superstar netminder, Leo Liao for stopping 21 of 22 shots.

2019 ends with victories for Novotel & Peak

In the first game on December 15th — the last set of SHL matches in 2019 ¬— the Novotel Spitfires (6-4) took on AWARE (2-8).
Novotel was missing many regulars including star keeper Leo Liao, and found replacements in goalie Yves Gaboriault, Thai national team player Masato Kitiyama, Mangkorn Sukwiboon, Ichiro Hara and Nicky Sukpanichcharoen. It was Gaboriault’s first action of the 2019-20 season, and he stopped 26 of the 27 shots fired his way, earning the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award.

Peak edges Aware in week ten while Novotel launches monster comeback

In the first game of week ten action, Peak and Aware battled in one of the more exciting games of the SHL season. SHL leading scorer Corry Day continued his torrid pace early in the first period when he took a pass from Brandon Vick, split the Peak defense, and slid the puck past Gabor goalie Gabor Toth. The stars of the SHL shone bright this game, as Harrison Oztemel tried the score at 1 late in the first period. Jesse Starosta continued to rack up the points and kept his league-leading points battle with Day alive by getting the assist on the Oztemel goal.

Week 8 News

Week 8 News

Week 8 was on December 1st, 2019. In our first game of the night we had the Novotel Spitfires going head to head with PEAK Biolabs. PEAK started things off 10 minutes into the first period when Elias Bengtsson scored off of an assist from Adam Teodorsson and Ryan Yaden. In the second period, the Spitfires scored 3 goals, one from Bill Bredesen and two from Mike Freeson, to one goal from PEAK by Michael White. The third period saw Freeson get his third goal of the night to give Novotel the win and earn Freeson his second Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game in a row.

Novotel takes over top spot in SHL week nine action

The Siam Hockey League (SHL) was honored to welcome Ryan Straschnitzki for a ceremonial puck-drop ahead of Sunday night’s action at The Rink at Central Rama 9.

Straschnitzki, a former Canadian junior hockey player, was paralyzed from the waist down in a bus crash last year in Saskatchewan that killed 16 of his teammates, coaches and staff, while seriously injuring a dozen others.

The 20-year-old has been in Bangkok for rehabilitation following an experimental spinal surgery. His positive attitude and perseverance have inspired the local hockey community and others in Thailand, and on Tuesday Straschnitzki was back on the ice at The Rink again, skating on a sled.

Week 4 to Week 7 News

Week 4 was on November 14. In the first game we had Novotel Spitfires vs Aware. Aware totally dominated this game, scoring 4 goals in the first period, one from Devin Michael, one from Matt Johnson and two from Brandon Vick. The Spitfires did score one in the first period, which was by Mike Freeson. Aware scored 2 more goals in the second period, one from Corry Day and a second by Devin Michael. The Spitfires did score two goals in the third period, one from Marcel Bouwens and one from Brad Wilson, but Aware scored one final goal in the third, which was the one to give Vick his hat trick, earning himself the Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game.

Week eight sees Hertz edge Peak & Novotel extends AWARE’s woes

Week eight of the Sport Corner Siam Hockey League season saw Peak Biolabs battle Hertz in game one and Novotel Spitfires take on Aware in the second match.

In Game one, Hertz and Peak gave the fans a great, close game from the opening puck drop.

Peak started the scoring a little over five minutes into the game when Mel Dhiranusumkit scored his first career SHL goal off a great assist by Patrick Forstner. Three minutes after Peak took the early lead, Hertz tied the game at one when Thai youngster Major Ingkharratphithakon, continuing a run of great play over the first part of the season, sniped a shot past Peak goalie Gabor Toth. Win Khukakeaw and First Kulrat earned helpers on the goal. Late in the first period, Hertz grabbed the lead when Captain Jordan Ashton, took a slick pass from Mike Wilson and fired the puck past Gabor. The second assist on the goal going to Darius Konotopetz.

Week seven action sees Novotel edge Hertz & Peak thump AWARE

Hertz goalie Lance Parker got off to a somewhat shaky performance on Thursday night, after putting in an outstanding Vezina trophy-type performance just a few days before that. As a result, Novotel jumped into a 3-0 lead but Parker rallied utilizing his unique acrobatic style, allowed no more goals, Hertz scored twice and when the final buzzer sounded succumbed to the Spitfires 3-2.

Bill Bredesen opened the scoring on a nice fed from Ernesto Bauer and then Mike Freeson scored back-to-back goals and Novotel nursed a 3-0 lead until halfway thru the second period when Tan Limpinphet, with his mother watching from the stands, finally scored for Hertz. Alex Phelps added a goal early in the third and despite a late flurry from Hertz the Spitfires were able to hold on giving them a 4-3 record on the season and second overall while Hertz sits in third spot with a 3-4 record. Both teams had 26 shots on net in this contest. Novotel keeper Leo Liao earned the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award but Mike Fresson garnered man vores as well.

Hertz & Peak triumph in week 6 action

Week six of the Sport Corner Siam Hockey League was a very entertaining affair. Going into the games, the standings looked as tight as can be, with the first game matching two 2-3 teams and the late game between two 3-2 teams. And the games didn’t disappoint as both were close contests with one ending in a one-goal game and the other only missing the one goal margin because of a late empty-net tally. With the SHL live broadcasts gaining more exposure, the SHL is putting its best foot forward with exciting games for the fans who make it out to the rink and for viewers around the world.
