AWARE wins 6th straight; Sukhumvit edges Hertz

Thursday January 18th saw the eleventh set of games played in the Sport Corner Siam Hockey League. The opening contest saw AWARE continue its dominance beating Expedia 7-3, while the Sukhumvit Spitfires hung on to defeat Hertz 7-6 in the thrilling second match of the night.

AWARE continues to look like a juggernaut, winning its sixth straight game, as we head towards the SHL championship on March 17th. Switching back to Patrick Leduc, who had yet to lose a game in the SHL, AWARE jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a goal by captain Patrik Lundback and two nice markers by Darius Konotopetz, the second being a nifty rush in from the blue line with a sweet top-shelf finish.

Expedia’s John Schachnovsky races AWARE’s Nicky Sukpanichcharoen to the puck,

Expedia’s Juhani Ijas then scored the first of his two goals on the night but AWARE’s Corry Day quickly countered using his Roadrunner-like speed to mystify Expedia keeper Yves Gaboriault, making it 4-1. It was Gaboriault’s first start in 2018, and he looked a tad shaky, but the talented Quebecois goalie should soon regain the form that saw him garner SHL goalie-of-the-year honors last season.

AWARE’s Ollie Moyse made it 5-1 but Ijas then scored his second of the night, so at end of the second period the score was 5-2 for AWARE. Yean Thanakroekkiat scored two goals in the third, lengthening AWARE’s lead to 7-2, then sub Stephen Sproule scored for Expedia with 90 seconds to go to make it a 7-3 final in AWARE’s favour: Ijas assisted on the play, giving him three points on the night.

The game was chippy at times but referee Jeremy Hutchins did a good job of keeping it under control. Midway through the second period, Expedia defenseman Remo Remo Nyffenegger took his second hooking penalty of the night. Objecting to the call, he pounded his stick first off the glass in front of the penalty box and then off-the-glass inside the penalty box drawing first a ten-minute and then a game misconduct.

Then as the second period ended Expedia captain Mike Wilson earned a roughing penalty. Irate, he mimicked Nyffenegger’s actions drawing his own 10-minute misconduct.

Yean, who also had two assists on the night, earned the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game honours for his four-point performance. AWARE had 25 shots on goal on the night, while Expedia had 21.

The second game was a succession of momentum shifts with Hertz jumping out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period: Sukhumvit came back to lead 7-4 late in the third and Hertz put on a furious finish in the final minute, scoring twice and almost tying it as Andy Brine set up Hertz captain Justin St Denis with 53 seconds left and then scored himself with 23 seconds left. Brine, who had three points on the night (1G, 2A), was a force to be reckoned with every time he touched the puck. Justin St. Denis also had a big night (2g, 1A) and deserves a lot of credit for rallying his troops in the final second as Hertz fought for the equalizer.

Sukhumvit captain Brad Wilson & Hertz captain Justin St Denis turn towards the play.

Harrison Oztemel had two goals and an assist for Sukhumvit, turning in another strong game, and Michael White continued his stellar play, turning in three assists. White has been exceptional in the short time he had been with Sukhumvit, generating scoring play after scoring play in each game he has played.

Substitute Patrick Forstner won the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game honours for his hat-trick performance, as his line with White and veteran Scott Murray did a good job of playing tic-tac-toe with the puck. Sukhumvit outshot Hertz 34-27 on the night.

The SHL standings have AWARE atop the table with an 9-2 record; the Sukhumvit Spitfires are in second spot at 6-5; Expedia is in third with a 4-7 mark; and Hertz is in last with a 3- 8 record.

Expedia’s Juhani Ijas and Hertz’s Andy Brine lead the stats race with 15 points each; AWARE’s Devin Michael is in second spot with 12 points and Expedia’s Jordan Ashton and Hertz’s Bill Bredesen are tied for third with 10 points each.
The SHL continues play on Sunday January 21st with Hertz playing AWARE at 8:30pm and Expedia playing Sukhumvit at 9:30. Admission is free and all games take place at the Rink, 7th floor, Central Grand Rama IX.

AWARE short-circuits Spitfires & Hertz trumps Expedia

Sunday January 14th saw the Sport Corner Siam Hockey League turn into the second part of its season with the tenth set of games being played. The opening contest saw AWARE whitewash the Sukhumvit Spitfires 9-1, while Hertz defeated Expedia 5-2 in the match of the night.

AWARE is looking like the team to beat as we head towards the SHL championship on March 17th. Despite using three different goaltenders the team has gelled like no other. While other squads have been dogged by injuries or absences the Patrik Lundback-led AWARE squad just seems to find ways to win. And speedster Corry Day continues to play as if he’s continually dipping into the fountain of youth. Nearing 50, Corry skates like a player in his early twenties, using his speed to score and set-up a number of highlight reel goals. In this game, where he won Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game honours, he scored once and had three helpers. Devin Michael also had a huge night for AWARE with two goals and two assists; Lundback added two goals and an assist; and Jouni Heinonen had four assists.

AWARE’s Oliver Moyse takes aim at at the Sukhumvit net.

Harrison Oztemel with his sixth goal of the season scored Suhkumvit’s lone marker, as the team was missing Dave McBurney, Richie Jiaravanon and Ith Vatanapanyakul. This is just a game that Sukhumvit would much rather forget as they weren’t in it from the puck drop and seemed listless and lethargic throughout.

In the second game, Expedia was missing Juhani Ijas, Pratch Siridhara, Chayutapon (First) Kulrat, Win Khuhakaew and Rob Taylor, so Ichiro Hara and Yutaka Kariya stepped in as subs. Hertz was missing Sebastien Ranger, Alasdair Fawcett and Ralf Dittmer and grabbed Patrick Forstner as a substitute player.

Hertz jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on goals by Mike Triacca, Justin St. Denis, Moo Tengsakul and Bill Bredesen and things did not look good for Expedia. But then substitute Kariya started displaying some of his excellent skating ability he’s known for, scoring once and assisting on Remo Nyffenegger’s blast. And just as it looked like the momentum was shifting Expedia’s way, keeper Cox let in a goal to Hertz’s sub Forstner and the momentum swept back to Hertz and they rode the game out for their third victory of the season.

Expedia’s Mike Wilson battles with Hertz’s Peter Borjesson (middle) and Bill Bredesen (right).

Hertz’s Lance Parker, stopped 35 of the 37 shots he faced, earning his second Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game honour this season, while James Cox, starting in his second consecutive start for Expedia in place of Yves Gaboriault, turned aside 26 of the 31 of the chucks of rubber fired at him.

The SHL standings now see AWARE atop the table with an 8-2 record; the Sukhumvit Spitfires are in second spot at 5-5; Expedia is in third with a 4-6 mark; and Hertz is in last with a 3-7 record.

Expedia’s Juhani Ijas and Hertz’s Andy Brine lead the stats race with 12 points each; Expedia’s Jordan Ashton and AWARE’s Devin Michael are tied for second with 10 points each and AWARE’s Phanuruj (Phu) Suwachirat, the early candidate for SHL rookie-of-the-year honors, is in third spot with 9

Phu is one of the most interesting stories of the year. At 16, he is the youngest player in the league, and at 175cm and 67kg is certainly not one of the biggest, but a combination of speed and tenacity have seen excel against the veteran players in the league. He even garnered Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game honors in AWARE’s recent 5-2 victory over Hertz.

The SHL continues play on Thursday January 18th with Expedia playing AWARE at 8:30 and Hertz playing Suhkumvit at 9:30pm and. Admission is free and all games take place at the Rink, 7th floor, Central Grand Rama IX.

Sukhumvit & AWARE continue winning ways

Reporting by Dom Dumais & Christian Oloffson

The Sukhumvit Spitfires and AWARE continued to put up “W’s” on the score sheet in SHL action on Thursday January 11th. In the opening contest, Sukhumvit struck first in its match with Expedia when at 9:15 of the first period some tic-tac-toe passing saw Krittapad “Peam” Jaratwuttipreeda finish off a nice three-way passing play from Michael White and Adrian Meyers. Things then got a little physical near the end of the period when Expedia’s Chayutapon “First” Kulrat was called for body checking.

Sukhumvit’s Tewin Chartsuwan prepares to stop a shot from Expedia’s Remo Nyffenneger

Michael White scored his first goal of the night early in the second period when he took a pass from Chanokchon “Tan” Limpinphet. Just five minutes after his goal, White was called for hooking when Yutaka Kariya took a stretch pass and White prevented him from getting a breakaway by hooking him to slow him down. Sukhumvit managed to kill that penalty, but Chaval “Richie” Jiaravanon was then called for bodychecking 11 minutes into the period, which led to Juhani Ijas’ power play goal, assisted by John Schachnovsky and Kariya.

Just shy of a minute into the third period, Rob Taylor collided with Pattarapol “Dream” Ungkulpattanasuk causing both men to go crashing to the ice, resulting in Taylor getting a goaltender interference penalty. But Expedia was able to kill the penalty and keep the game within one.

With less than four minutes left in the game, Jiaravanon put on a performance that would have earned him lots of YouTube views if there was video footage available. He picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and deked his way around a couple of Expedia players before making an incredible move around defenseman Pratch Siridhara on the blue line. It was almost like the game decelerated and everyone was moving in slow motion. In-all-alone with the goalie, he made a couple of fancy moves and showed off his silky mitts before eventually tucking in the puck behind a sprawling James Cox in the Expedia net.

With a minute-and-a-half left in the game, Expedia pulled their goaltender in hopes of bringing the score within one, but with just two seconds left in the game, White took a pass from Tewin “Thor” Charsuwan and slid the puck into the empty net to seal the game. The Spitfires earned a solid 4-1 win, though Expedia did outshoot Sukhumvit 24-22. Michael White earned his second straight Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the game honours for his three-point effort (two goals and an assist).

In the second game of the evening, HERTZ was looking to turn their season around and start their climb in the standings. But league-leading AWARE had other plans and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from rookie sensation Phu Suwachirat and consistent point producer Devin Michael. It looked like it was going to be a long night for the HERTZ team. But that is when HERTZ leading scorer, Andy Brine, decided to take matters into his own hands. He skated swiftly up the ice and used the big frame of defenseman Yean Thanakroekkiat as a screen on a powerful blast from the neutral zone to get HERTZ back within one.

Hertz’s Justin St. Denis and AWARE’s Christian Olofsson jostle for the puck

The momentum proved to be short-lived, however, as Devin Michael was not done yet and extended AWARE’s lead to 3-1 early in the third. Yean would also get his revenge on Andy when he went end-to-end, skating past Andy, and fired his patented laser wrist shot through the legs of goalie Lance Parker.

Phu would add his second goal of the game to earn the Rolling Stone Player of the Game award. In the dying seconds of the game, Carly Hill made history as the first ever female player to score in the SHL when she showed off some strong net-front-presence to round out the scoring. The final score was Aware 5 Hertz 2 with AWARE outshooting Hertz 31-25 on the night.

After nine weeks of action, AWARE sits atop the leader with a 7-3 record: Sukhumvit is second with a 5-4 mark; with Expedia in third at 4-5; and Hertz is in last spot with a 2-7 record.

Juhani Ijas sits atop the SHL scoring race with 6 goals and 6 assists; Jordan Ashton and Andy Brine are tied for second spot with 10 points apiece (Jordan on ten goals, and Andy with five goals and five assists). Tewin Chartsuwan and John Schachnovsky are tied for third with eight points each (John with four goals and four assists: Thor has three goals and five assists).

The season resumes Sunday January 14th with the Spitfires playing AWARE at 8:30pm and Hertz playing Expedia at 9:30pm. Admission is free and all games take place at the Rink, 7th floor, Central Grand Rama IX.

We had some great games on the 21st.

In our first game on December 21st we had Hertz going head to head with the Sukhumvit Spitfires. Sukhumvit snaps losing streak: AWARE solidifies hold on first

The final set of games for the 2017 calendar year in the Sport Corner Siam Hockey League (SHL) 2017-2018 season took place on Thursday December 21st. The opening game saw the Sukhumvit Spitfires snap a four-game game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Hertz, while AWARE edged Expedia 4-3 in a thrilling back-and-forth contest in the second match.

The Spitfires were missing seven of their regular players due to illness or travel commitments, but they did have Tewin “Thor” Chartsuwan in their line-up as a sub. Thor has been in the line-up for all four Sukhumvit victories this year, so it is fair to say he’s earned the moniker “the difference maker”. Michael White, had a huge game for Sukhumvit scoring two goals, roaring all over the ice and earning Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game honours. White, who missed the first six games of the season, has done a nice job of fitting in and finding his groove in the last two games.

Andy Brine had a great game for Hertz in a losing cause.

Sukhumvit jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Ernesto Bauer and captain Brad Wilson, but Andy Brine put on quite a one-man show scoring two goals within 45 seconds to even the score late in the second period. Brine, who moved between defense and forward all game, was a force to be reckoned throughout the match.

Richie Jiaravanon scored the nicest goal of the night, displaying Gretzky-like stickhandling ability in front of the Hertz net, before roofing home the game winner past Hertz keeper Lance Parker early in the third period. Michael White sealed the victory for Sukhumvit scoring two slick goals on Parker late in the third period.
Dream Ungkulpattanasuk stopped 32 of the 34 shots sent his way in the Sukhumvit net, earning his fourth victory of the season while Lance Parker turned aside 21 of the 26 pucks fired at him in the Hertz net.

The AWARE-Expedia match was the closest-fought match this season and until the final seconds, could have gone either way. AWARE jumped out to a 1-0 first-period lead on a goal by Jouni Heinonen. In the second stanza, goals by Expedia’s captain Mike Wilson and star defenseman Juhani Ijas saw Expedia take a 2-1 going into the second intermission.

Midway through the third period, however, AWARE’s Phu Suwachirat, the youngest player in the league, went coast-to-coast and beat Yves Gaboriault on the short side to tie the game at 2-2. Three minutes later, AWARE went ahead when David Boere scored after AWARE captain Patrik Lundback made a brilliant play to keep the puck in the Expedia zone.

Expedia captain Mike Wilson & AWARE’s Darius Konotopetz do battle during their match.

With five minutes left in the game, Expedia’s Jari Eerikainen made a great rush down the right-hand side of the boards dropping the puck to Mike Wilson in front of the net who sent the puck past a sprawling Juiz Lertitsiri to tie the score at 3 with five minutes remaining. But two minutes later, Darius Konotopetz became the hero of the night, potting the game winner on an assist from Lundback.

Lundback, with two assists on the night, won the Rolling Stone Pizza PoG honour for his dominant play at both ends of the ice.

Juiz stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced in the AWARE net while Yves turned aside 19 of the 23 pucks fired his way guarding the Expedia cage. It was Juiz’ second straight win for AWARE, and he has made a number of outstanding saves during that stretch.

Going into the holiday break AWARE sits atop the SHL table with a 6-2 record and 12 points: Expedia and Sukhumvit are tied with eight points each and identical 4-4 records, while Hertz is in last spot with a 2-6 record and four points.

Expedia has the top three spots in the scoring table as Thai national team coach Juhani Ijas leads the SHL scoring table with 11 points; teammate Jordan Ashton is in second spot with 10 points (all goals); and Expedia captain Mike Wilson is in third with eight points. Substitute Tewin “Thor” Chartsuwan and Sukhumvit’s Ernesto Bauer sit tied in fourth spot with eight points each.

The season resumes Thursday January 11th 2018 with Hertz playing Expedia at 8:30pm and the Spitfires playing AWARE at 9:30. Admission is free and all games take place at the Rink, 7th floor, Central Grand Rama IX.

The Sport Corner Siam Hockey League News Week 5 – December 10-16, 2017

{VIDEO}

We had some great games on December 14th.

In our first game we had Expedia facing off against Hertz. At the puck drop, Expedia only had 9 skaters and 1 goaltender, and as per the league rules, they were forced to forfeit the game, but the teams decided to play a friendly game, with not stats kept.

This was a high paced game with scoring going back and forth, with Expedia taking an early lead, but Hertz coming back and winning it 8-5 in the end. Carly Hill, the leagues first full time female skater, scored her first career goal of the Sport Corner Siam Hockey League and also notched up an assist, giving her the Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game.

In our second game of the night, we had the Sukhumvit Spitfires going head to head with Aware. Aware scored the first goal of the night , and maintained their lead throughout the night. Juiz Lertitsiri, sub netminder for Aware, stopped 27 of 29 shots, earning him the Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game.

Hertz wins by default and AWARE surges into first

Thursday December 14th saw the seventh set of games in the Sport Corner Siam Hockey League (SHL) 2017-2018 season take place. The opening contest saw Hertz defeat Expedia by default, while AWARE dropped the Sukhumvit Spitfires 5-2 in the second match of the evening.

Thursday morning had Expedia look like they were going to dress their full squad for the first time this season. But by 5pm, Pratch Siridhara, Chayutapon (First) Kulrat and La Chamnanrattankul had all dropped out. So, Expedia captain Mike Wilson reached out for a replacement and Ichiro Hara was able to show at the last minute. Unfortunately, what Mike and the rest of the Expedia squad didn’t count on was Rob Taylor getting caught in traffic and Chap Kovitaya having a minor traffic accident causing Rob to miss the start of the game and Chap to miss the game altogether. This meant that at puck drop Expedia only had nine skaters and a goalie meaning they had to default the game.

Expedia’s captain Mike Wilson cuts past Hertz’s Bill Bredesen.

Hertz and Expedia did play their game anyway and Hertz won 8-5, though the official recorded score was 1-0 and the personal statistics accrued didn’t count.  Carly Hill took the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of- the-game honors, becoming the second woman to do so this year.

On Sunday, La will marry Yuri Nagayama, daughter of SHL photographer Tadamasa Nagayama and sister of Thai-Japanese star player Hideki Nagayama, now playing in Denmark. As many of the SHL players and their families will be going to the wedding, the SHL games originally scheduled for December 17th were switched to December 21st.

In the second game last Thursday, Jouni Heinonen, Corry Day, David Boere and Nicky were all missing from the AWARE roster, but they picked by Top Rutthapong as a sub, and Top, playing in his first game of the SHL season, did not disappoint, scoring a goal. Other goal scorers for AWARE included Devin Michael, Ryan Yaden, Phu Suwachirat & Mangkorn Sukwiboon. Richie Jiaravanon and Scott Murray scored for Sukhumvit in a losing cause with Stephen Sproule having a great game subbing for Sukhumvit as he set up both goals and was buzzing around the ice all night.

Spitfires’ captain Brad Wilson overviews the play.

Juiz Lertitsiri subbed as the AWARE goalie, stopping 25 of the 27 shots fired his way. It was Juiz’s first appearance in the SHL this season and what a performance he put on, capturing the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award outplaying Dream Ungkulpattanasuk, who stopped 13 of the 18 shots fired his way in the Sukhumvit goal.

After seven weeks of SHL hockey, AWARE sits atop the table with a 5-2 record; Expedia is in second with a 4-3 record (including a loss by default); Sukhumvit is in third at 3-4 (including a loss by default); and Hertz is in last with a 2-5 record.

Expedia’s Jordan Ashton and Juhani Ijas still lead stats race with 10 points each while super sub Tewin Chartsuwan sits in second with 8 points while Expedia’s John Schachnovsky and Sukhumvit’s Ernesto Bauer are tied for third with 7 points each.

The final games of 2017 will be held on Thursday December 21st with Hertz playing Suhkumvit at 8:30pm and Expedia playing AWARE at 9:30. Admission is free and all games take place at the Rink, 7th floor, Central Grand Rama IX.

Forfeit & Christmas Party

Dear All,

In our first game between Expedia and Hertz, Expedia was unfortunately unable to put 10 skaters on the ice at the time of the puck drop.  As per rule 6.5 – Defaulted Games:

Teams are expected to be ready to play at the scheduled start time. A minimum of 10 skaters and 1 goaltender are required to start a game. If the team fails to have 10 skaters and 1 goalie by the scheduled opening faceoff, the game will be forfeited. The team with the required number of players will receive points for a 1–0 win. The game will still be played, but a 1-0 win is recorded. Forfeited games will not be re-scheduled.

Hertz takes the win with a score of 1-0 going into the books.  A friendly game was played between Expedia and Hertz, but no scores were kept.

The league would like to remind all players that the SHL has a large number of substitute players that look forward to playing when they get an opportunity.  We hope no full-time players have to miss any games, however we know life sometimes forces players to miss games.  With the large number of quality substitute players available, we should never have to force one team to forfeit a league game.  The league would like to reiterate that good communication between players and their captains will be the one and only way for the league to avoid the unfortunate incident we saw last night.  We have now had two forfeits this season, and we want to avoid any more for the rest of the season.  So, please advise your captain of your status, and if that changes at any time, please immediately notify your captain, so he can secure a substitute player.

In our second, better bit of news, this evening, December 15, starting at 7:00 p.m. (19:00) our Platinum sponsor, The Sport Corner will be having their Christmas party at The Sport Corner.  There will be food and at 8:00 p.m. (20:00) there will be a live band.

The Sport Corner Siam Hockey League News Week 4 – December 03-09, 2017

{VIDEO}

We had another week of only one game night, which was on December 03.

In our first game of the night, we had Aware vs Hertz. This was a game that had a lot of potential with Hertz getting their first win of the season last week, but sadly, Hertz just couldn’t hold it together and and lost this one 7-3. Jouni Heinonen scored 2 goals and marked up an assist to win himself the Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game.

Our second game of the night, we had the Sukhumvit Spitfires vs Expedia, which ended up being a battle between brother and sister as Dream Ungkulpattanasuk was in the net for the Spitfires and, his sister, Pop Ungkulpattansuk was subbing for Expedia’s regular netminder, Yves Gaboriault. This was a close one with both teams putting up 23 shots apiece, but Pop stopped 22 of 23 shots, one more than Dream to earn her the Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game.
