Siam Mandalay thumps Novotel big time

SHL games on Sunday, March 28th saw KCG extend Aware’s misery, beating them by a score of 5-1, while Siam Mandalay brought Novotel down to earth with a 7-4 pounding.

KCG has dominated its series with Aware this season.

Game one saw three young Thais (Punn Phasukkjwatana, Peam Juratwuttipreeda & Winnie Luckanatiakorn) score for KCG in quick succession giving the team a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission. Punnie scored his second goal of the game early in the second before Aware’s rookie-of-the-year candidate Roger Promthong broke Leo Liao’s shutout bid later in the same stanza. KCG captain Harrison Oztemel added an empty-net goal making it a 5-1 final.

It should be noted that Aware did outshoot KCG 35-24 in this contest, they just couldn’t get any breaks and KGC keeper Leo “the Great Wall of Taiwan” was a big part of that winning the Jerky Monster play-of-the week for his huge save on Masato Kitayama early in the game.

After the match, Aware defenseman Roman Larin announced that he would be leaving the team to return to his native Russia.

KCG’s Time Phatigulsate & Aware’s Kim Aarola battle for the puck.

Punn Phasukkjwatana earned himself the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award for the first time in his career with his three-point performance (2G, 1A).

In game two, French-Canadian Seb Verdy continued his stellar play this month staking Novotel to an early 1-0 lead but it was all downhill from there for the Spitfires as Siam Mandalay struck for three quick goals from Mitch Morrison, sub Win Khuhakaew and Mike Wilson taking a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Darius Konotopetz, centrepiece of the Crash Line, made it 4-1 early in the second, and then Ken Kindborn narrowed the lead to 4-2 but Jordan Ashton scored for Siam Mandalay making it 5-2 heading into the final stanza.

Siam Mandalay’s Homme Thaiyanont made it 6-2 early in the third; Novotel’s Major Ingharratohithakon made a valiant effort trying to bring his team close scoring two goals within 21 seconds later in the third, but Mike Wilson, scored an empty-netter, his second goal of the night, to make it a 7-4 final.

Siam Mandalay’s Mike Wilson breaks out of his zone with puck.

Aside from Major’s late heroics, Siam Mandalay dominated this game and it was very apparent how much Novotel misses defender Christoph Anliker, out with injury, who really takes a lot of pressure off of Kindborn.

Siam Mandalay captain Jordan Ashton led his team to victory and was awarded with the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award for two-point performance (1G, 1A) and game-winning goal.

After sixteen weeks of action, the Novotel Spitfires sit atop the SHL standings with a 13-3-0 record for 26 points. KCG sits in second spot with a 10-3-3 record for 23 points. Siam Mandalay is in third position with a 8-7-1 record for 17 points and Aware is in the cellar with a 1-15 record for 2 points.

Siam Mandalay’s Non Aekkasemnarong prepares to unleash a slapshot.

The SHL scoring race still sees Novotel claiming the top three spots with Tomas Stastny at 32 points, followed by teammates Mike Freeson with 21 points and Ken Kindborn with 30 points. KCG teammates Jan Isaksson & Patrick Forstner are in fourth and fifth place respectively with 27 & 25 points each.

Barring COVID-19 restrictions SHL action resumes at the Imperial Samrong on April 18th with KCG playing Novotel at 9pm and Siam Mandalay facing off against Aware at 10pm. Top spot is still up for grabs, although the Novotel only has to win one game to claim that prize, and then it can choose its playoff opponent.

Novotel & KCG continuing their winning ways

The first SHL game on Sunday, February 28th saw the Novotel Spitfires defeat Siam Mandalay 7-5. The second match saw KCG beat Aware by a 7-2 score.

Game one saw Novotel jump out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Major Ingharratohithakon and Ken Kindborn but Siam Mandalay, as they are prone to do, bounced back with markers from Crash Line members Turner Johnson and Darius Konotopetz sending the teams tied at two into the first intermission.

Chritoph Anliker put Novotel back in front early in the second period with a remarkable rush that ended with a remarkable deke past Siam Mandalay keeper Dream Ungkulpattanasuk earning him the Jerky Monster play-of-the week. The teams continued to swap goals as Konotopetz scored to tie it at three and then Novotel’s Seb Verdy scored his third goal in two games before substitute Win Khuhakeaw scored for Siam Mandalay to send the teams tied at four into the second intermission.

Novotel’s Seb Verdy fends off Siam Mandalay’s Alex Phelps.

Novotel captain Mike Freeson was getting tired of his team’s lackadaisical performance and gave them a good talking to during the break. As a result, a much more forceful Novotel appeared from the dressing room in the third period scoring three unanswered goals; two by Tomas Stastny and one by Mangkorn Sukwiboon. Siam Mandalay’s Johnson added a goal late in the game to make it a 7-4 final.

Stastny had a four-point night, following his six-point performance the previous Sunday, and the star player came close to replicating his father’s six- and eight-point nights in successive games with the Quebec Nordiques in the 1980s.

But on this night, Mangkorn Sukwiboon was awarded the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award for his outstanding play and four-point performance (1G, 3A).

Jan made it 1-0 early in the game, Aware’s Kim Aarola tied it at one and then Time Phatigulsate staked KCG to 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

KCG increased their lead to 5-1 on markers by Jesse Starosta, Mel Dhiranasukorn and captain Harrison Oztemel on a nice top-corner snipe. Aware’s Brandon Vick scored early in the third to give his team some hope but KCG’s Isaksson snuffed out that rally quickly with two straight goals making it a 7-2 final.

Isaksson earned himself the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award again for his second straight four-point performance (3G, 1A).

KCG’s Patrick Forstner corrals the puck as Aware players give chase.

SHL News Week 11

We’ve just finished off the eleventh week of the SHL.

In our first game of the night, we had KCG going head to head with Siam Mandalay. This was really a game physical play vs a game of skill play. At the end of the first period, the score was tied one-one with a goal by Ernesto Bauer for Siam Mandalay and a goal by Jan Isaksson for KCG. In the second period, Siam Mandalay took the lead and increased it to two with both goals coming from Turner Johnson. Early in the third period, Siam Mandalay increased their lead to three with a goal by Darius Konotopetz. With just over five minutes left in the third period, it was like Siam Mandalay just ran out of gas and KCG’s Jan Isaksson scored, followed by a goal from Peam Jaratwuttipreada. Isaksson tied things up with just over two minutes left in the game and Patrick Forstner getting the game winning goal with less than thirty seconds left in the game.

The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Jan Isaksson for his hat trick and assist.

In the second game we had Aware facing off against Novotel Spitfires. This game was very much the Novotel Spitfires show where in the first eight minutes of the game, Novotel was up 5-0 with two goals coming from Major Ingkharratphithakon, a goal from captain, Mike Freeson, a goal by Tomas Stastny and Ken Kindborn. Aware tried to rally late in the first period with goals by Masato Kitayama and Roger Promthong, but Stastny stopped that with a goal with just fourteen second left in the period. Aware again tried to rally in the second period with Promthong getting his second goal of the night, which was followed by Novotel’s Seb Verdy getting his first goal of the season. Aware tried again in the third period with Promthong getting a hat trick, but it just wasn’t enough with Verdy getting his second goal of the night and Stastny getting his third of the night.

The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Tomas Stastny for his three goals and three assists.

The Jerky Monster Play of the Week went to Patrick Forstner for his game winning goal in the first game.

To finish off the show, Zack and Dom talk about what the four teams need to do to pull off wins in their next games.

KCG rebounds in stunning fashion; Novotel wins again

The two SHL games on Sunday February 21st couldn’t have been more different. The first game saw KCG come back from a 4-1 deficit to score four unanswered goals in the final five minutes and defeat Siam Mandalay 5-4. The second game was over quickly as the Novotel Spitfires jumped out to a 5-0 first-period lead over Aware and went on to a 9-4 romp.

Game one’s roller-coaster match saw KCG ultimately prevail in the final 27 seconds of the game to beat Siam Mandalay who was leading 4-1 with 5:23 left on the clock.

Siam Mandalay’s Darius Konotopetz reaches for the puck as KCG’s Gabriel Rosko is in hot pursuit.

Ernesto Bauer started things off for Siam Mandalay giving them a 1-0 lead but KCG’s Jan Isaksson tied it up to send the teams tied at one into the first intermission. Turner Johnson scored two goals in the second period, the second on a spectacular move on a breakaway that caught KCG goalie Leo Liao totally off guard. Siam Mandalay took a 3-1 lead in to the second intermission.

An incredible comeback saw KCG score four goals within five minutes for a miraculous one come-from-behind win. Isaksson scored twice to record the hat-trick and Peam Jaratwuttipreeda and newly-acquired Patrick Forstner potted a goal each. Forstner’s goal came on an unbelievable deke that earned him the Jerky Monster play-of-the week.

Siam Mandalay’s Non Aekkasemnarong chases the puck between two KCG defenders.

But it was really Jan Isaksson who stole the show as he led the comeback and earned the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award for his four-point performance (3G, 1A). Siam Mandalay was missing four players on the night including captain Jordan Ashton and Mike Wilson and was subbing in Michael White and Phu Suwacharit.

In game two, Major Ingharratohithakon started things off for Novotel scoring two goals, and almost a third, on his first shift. He was followed in quick succession by Captain Mike Freeson, Tomas Stastny and Ken Kindborn giving Novotel a 5-0 lead. Aware then countered with two goals late in the period by Masato Kitayama on a nice tip-in goal Roger Promthong but then with just 14 seconds left in the period some nice digging behind the Aware net saw Stastny steal the puck and score his second of the night for Novotel to close out stanza one 6-2 in Novotel’s favour.

Novotel’s Major Ingharratohithakon had a great night, scoring two goals on his first shift.

Roger scored again in the second period to make it 6-3 but Seb Verdy with his first goal of the season put Novotel up by four again 7-3. Roger completed his hat-trick midway through the third period but that was all the scoring Aware could muster as Verdy added his second goal of the night and Stastny completed his hat-trick making it a 9-4 final. In recognition of his six-point night (3G, 3A) Stastny was awarded the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award.

After eleven weeks of action, the Novotel Spitfires sit atop the SHL standings with a 10-1-0 record for 20 points. KCG sits in second spot with a 6-3-2 record for 14 points. Siam Mandalay, the only team to beat Novotel, is in third position with a 5-5-1 record for 11 points and Aware is in the cellar with a 1-10 record.

Novotel’s Andrew Ross and Aware’s Denis Omelka look for the puck.

The Novotel Spitfires remain atop the SHL race as Mike Freeson is in first spot with 22 points, Tomas Stastny is in second place with 21 points, and Ken Kindborn is in third spot with 17 points. KCG’s Jan Isaksson is in fourth with 16 points Aware’s rookie’s sensation Roger Promthong is in fifth place with 14 points.

SHL action at the Imperial Samrong continues on February 28th with Siam Mandalay facing off against Novotel at 9pm and KCG playing Aware at 10pm.
