SHL News Week 10

We had Zack back with us this week.

In our first game we had Novotel Spitfires going against KCG. With just over five minutes left in the first period, sub Stephen Sproule hit Scotty Murray who scored to the Novotel Spitfires. Thing were pretty quite for both team until the Novotel was called for a hooking penalty late in the second period which KCG capitalized on and Punn Phasukkjwatana found Jan Isaksson who scored with less than a minute left in the second period. The play was back and forth for the third period with neither team able to get past the netminders. Just a minute and a half into the overtime period had the Spitfires’, Christoph Anliker catch Tomas Stastny in the high slot who rifled a snapshot past Liao for the win. The Rolling Sone Pizza Player of the Game went to Christoph for his outstanding offensive and defensive play all night.

In the second game of the night, at 10:00 pm, we had Siam Mandalay going head to head with Aware. At 13:30, Mike Wilson found Siam Mandalay captain, Jordan Ashton, with a pass who scored. Aware kept fighting and with just shy of seven minutes left the first period, Aware’s Masato Kitayama hit super rookie, Roger Promthong with a pass who fired it past Dream Ungkulpattanasuk to tie things up. With just 1:40 left in the first period, Tan Limpinphet scored on Lance Parker after receiving a pass from Turner Johnson to put Siam Mandalay back in the lead with a short handed goal. Both teams fought hard through the second period and most of the third period, until there were two minutes left in the game and Wilson of Siam Mandalay received a pass from Limpinphet to increase their lead to two. With a minute and a half left in the game, Limpinphet scored his second goal of the game with an unassisted goal. The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Dream Ungkulpattanasuk for stopping 18 of 19 shorts.

The Jerky Monster Play of the Week went to Tan Limpinphet for his steal and goal to finish the game off.

Novotel & Siam Mandalay continue winning ways

The Novotel Spitfires and Siam Mandalay continued their early success in 2021 winning for the second straight week as Novotel defeated KCG 2-1 in an overtime thriller in game one on Valentine’s Day and Siam Mandalay beat Aware 4-1 in game two.

Novotel tool a 1-0 lead late in period one when two wily veterans combined as substitute Steven Sproule found Scott Murray who sniped a snapshot by stunned KCG keeper Leo Liao.

Novotel’s Mike Freeson continues to lead the league in scoring.

KGG battled back and when Scott Murray took a hooking penalty the KCG powerplay went to work and Thai national team star Jan Isaksson snapped one past Ben Kleineschay from Punn Phasukkjwtana.

The play was pretty much even throughout as Novotel outshot KCG 30-28 and both keepers made a number of key saves to send the game into overtime.

Thirty seconds into overtime Spitfire defenseman Christoph Anliker rambled up ice and cut behind the KCG net to feed a perfect centering pass to Tomas Stastny who fired it home with a blast reminiscent of his father slapping one home for the Quebec Nordiques.

Skirmish in front of Novotel keeper Ben Kleineschay.

Game two saw Thai national team player Kim Aarola play his first game for his new team Aware since coming out of quarantine and he did draw an assist on Aware’s only goal by Roger Promthong midway thru the first period.

This game was much closer than the score indicated as Siam Mandalay only lead 2-1 for most of the game on markers by captain Jordan Ashton and Tan Limpinphet.

They added two goals in the final two minutes as first Mike Wilson on a nice wrist shot scored the clincher and then Tan with a beauty and his second goal of the night send a sizzling wrist shot past Aware keeper Lance Parker to make it a 4-1 final. Tan’s second goal earned him the Jerky Monster play-of-the-week award.

Aware’s Denis Omelka and Siam Mandalay’s Darius Konotopetz tangle in front of the Aware net.

For his end-to-end rush that set up Tomas Stastny’s OT-winning goal Novotel’s Christoph Anliker earned the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game in game one. Dream Ungkulpattanasuk making 18 saves in the Siam Mandalay net took up the pizza honours in game two.

After ten weeks of action, the Novotel Spitfires sit atop the SHL standings with a 9-1-0 record for 18 points. KCG sits in second spot with a 5-3-2 record for 12 points. Siam Mandalay, the only team to beat Novotel, is in third position with a 5-4-1 record for 11 points and Aware is in the cellar with a 1-9 record.

SHL News Week 9

Zack couldn’t make it to this recording, but Juhani Ijas joined Dom in the studio for this episode.

In our first game of the night we had the Novotel Spitfires facing off against Aware. Novotel are coming off of a tough loss while Aware are coming off a huge win. This could have been the moment to turn things around for Aware, but sadly, they allowed three goals in the opening period. One goal by Novotel Spitfires captain, Mike Freeson, one goal by Ken Kindborn and one goal by Mangkorn Sukwiboon. Aware attempted a comeback and started off with a goal in the second period by Masato Kitayama, and followed that up with a goal in the third period by Roman Larin. It just wasn’t enough and Freeson scored his second of the night midway through the third period to halt Aware’s comeback, earning himself the Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game.

In our second game, we had KCG going head to head with Siam Mandalay. Siam Mandalay opened things up early with a goal by Patrick Forstner, but KCG answered back with a goal by their captain, Harrison Oztemel, and then took the lead with less than a minute left in the first period when Gabe Rosko found the back of the net. KCG increased their lead to two when Jan Isaksson scored early in the second period. KCG just couldn’t hold on, and Siam Mandalay scored two goals to tie things up, one from Mitchel Morrison and one from Darius Konotopetz. In the third period Siam Mandalay increased their lead to to two when Konotopetz scored his second of the night and Tan Limpinphet scored, to give Siam Mandalay a 5-3 win over KCG. The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Darius Konotopetz for his two goals and one assist.

Novotel & Siam Mandalay start off 2021 with victories

The Siam Hockey League (SHL) last played on December 13th due to the second spike of the Coronavirus pandemic, so it took players time to find their skating legs last Sunday but once they did Novotel skated to a 4-2 victory over Aware in game one and Siam Mandalay came back to defeat KCG 5-3 in game two.

Novotel started strong in this game striking for three goals within a five-minute span late in the first period on goals by Mangkorn Sukwiboom, Ken Kindborn and Mike Freeson and it looked like the game would be over early.

Novotel’s Tomas Stastny lets one rip as Aware’s Roman Larin looks on.

Aware showed great resolve, however, and battled back as Masato Kitayama scored late in the second period to narrow the score to 3-1. Mike Freeson put the game away with his second goal of the night midway through the third period. But Roman Larin on a great dangle and individual effort, which earned him the Jerky Monster play-of-the-week award, made the final 4-2 in Novotel’s favour.

Late in the game, Thai national team captain Ken Kindborn received a nasty gash to the right side of his face and forehead when Masato Kitayama’s blasts shattered his visor. But he is one tough dude and promised to return for next Sunday’s action.

Aware’s Brandon Vick heads up ice with Novotel’s Tomas Stastny in hot pursuit.

For his outstanding four-point night (2G,2A), Spitfires captain Mike Freeson was once again named the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game. Ben Kleineschay made 31 saves in a stellar performance in the Novotel net gaining the victory, while Lance Parker made 18 saves in the Aware goal.

The second game saw Siam Mandalay’s crash line (Darius Konotopetz, Mitch Morrison and Turner Johnson) continue to bang away and make things happen. Patrick Forstner started things off for Siam Mandalay giving them a 1-0 lead but two late goals by Harrison Oztemel and Gabe Rosko put KCG ahead 2-1 going into the second period. KCG upped their lead to 3-1 early in the second on a nice goal by Jan Isaksson.

KCG’s Jan Isaksson dangles as Siam Mandalay’s Non Aekkasemnarong pursues.

But then the Crash Line went to work as Mitch Morrison and Darius Konotopetz with two staked Siam Mandalay to a 4-3 lead. Tan Limpinphet added the clincher on a pass for Michael White who was subbing for Mike Wilson on the night.

The Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game went to Siam Mandalay forward Darius Konotopetz who had two goals, including the winner, and an assist on the night. Dream Ungkulpattanasuk made 20 saves in the Siam Mandalay net earning the win, while Leo Liao made 18 saves in the KCG net.

Siam Mandalay’s skipper Jordan Ashton gives KCG’s Pann Hongsawadhi a gentle nudge.

Novotel Spitfires dominate the SHL race as Mike Freeson and Ken Kindborn are tied for the league lead with 16 points each and Tomas Stastny is in second spot with 14 points. The KCG pair of Harrison Oztemel and Jan Isaksson sit tied in third with nine points each.

SHL action at the Imperial Samrong continues on February 14th with Novotel playing KCG at 9pm and Siam Mandalay facing off Aware at 10pm.

SHL News Week 8

Dom and Zack talk about the games on December 13th, 2020.

The fist game of the night was Aware vs KCG. This was the best game that Aware has played to date, but they just couldn’t put all the things in the right place and KCG won this one 3-2.

The Rolling Stone Pizza Player of the Game went to Time Phatigulsate for his goal and assist.

In the second game of the night, at 10:00 pm, it was Siam Mandalay vs the Novotel Spitfires. The Jerky Monster Play of the Week went to Patrick Forstner for his coast to coast goal in the first period.

Dom and Zack also talked about the up and coming game in 2021 and the top points player, top goal scorers, top assist, top goalies and top penalty men.

Crash! Bang! Boom! Siam Mandalay ends Novotel’s winning streak

In a Siam Hockey League (SHL) season dominated by the defending champion Novotel Spitfires Siam Mandalay is suddenly making things very interesting.

Novotel was 7-0 going into their match with Siam Mandalay on December 13th and odds had the Spitfires led by captain Mike Freeson, Thai national team captain Ken Kindborn, and Swiss star Tomas Stastny (the league’s three top scorers) winning again, especially with the way goalkeeper Ben Kleineschay has been playing. Alas, Siam Mandalay put the kibosh on that dream of a perfect season with a resounding 6-2 thrashing.

Siam Mandalay’s Darius Konotopetz pursues the puck amidst a pack of players.

Thai national keeper Dream Ungkulpattanasuk returned to the form which saw him capture an SHL title with Hertz a couple years back and Siam Mandalay’s crash line (Darius Konotopetz, Mitch Morrison and Turner Johnson) just would not be denied as they created havoc and scoring opportunities for their squad all night. Siam Mandalay had won their previous game in overtime over KCG and lost a thriller in a wild shootout to Aware two weeks prior to that: it seems every game they are in has a dramatic finish.

Patrick Forstner started things off for Siam Mandalay giving them a 1-0 at the end of the first period with a nice end-to-end rush and goal-scoring blast. Tomas Stastny tied it up early in the second when he won the draw back to Mangkorn Sukwiboon and them deflected Mangkorn’s blast over Dream’s shoulder. Novotel went ahead for the first and only time in the game when Ed McConnell scored his first goal of the season on a nice setup from Ken Kindborn and Statsny.

Novotel captain Mike Freeson denied at the net by Siam Mandalay keeper Dream Ungkulpattanasuk.

It was all downhill from there for Novotel as Siam Mandalay scored twice more in the second period (Homme Thaiyanont & Mike Wilson) and three more (Darius Konotopetz, Turner Johnson and Yean Thankroekkiat) in the final stanza to make it a 6-2 rout.

Forstner earned himself the Jerky Monster play-of-the-week for his first-period goal; and Turner Johnson continued his impressive first season in the SHL with a goal and as assist to merit the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award.

The earlier game was also a surprise as heavily favoured KCG snuck by Aware 3-2 even though Aware was missing five of its top players (Roman Larin, Denis Omelka, Tewin Chartsuwan, Masato Kitiyama and Peam Jaratwittipreeda) and was subbing in Rob Taylor, Steve Sproule and Phu Suwacharit in their place.

Aware’s Roger Promthong and KCG’s Winnie Luckanatinakom battle for the puck.

Young Thai star Time Phatigulsate staked KCG to a 1-0 lead at the end of the second period. Aware evened it up early in the third period on a nice top-shelf by Michigan-native Brandon Vick. Winnie Luckanatinakom put KCG up to stay half way through the third period and Jesse Starosta added an empty-net goal to clinch it. SHL president John Schachnovsky added a goal with five seconds on the clock to make it a 3-2 final.

The Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game went to KCG forward Time Phatigulsate who had a goal and assist on the night. Leo Liao made 25 saves in the KCG net earning the win, while Lance Parker made 22 saves in the Aware cage.

KCG’s Jesse Starosta bounces the puck off the boards as Aware’s Devin Michel watches.

The league now breaks for the holiday season and returns to action at the Imperial Samrong arena on January10th with Novotel playing KCG at 9pm and Siam Mandalay facing off Aware at 10pm.

Crash Line leads Siam Mandalay to stunning OT victory

Game one of week seven action in the SHL saw Siam Mandalay play their second overtime game in as many weeks and this time they came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat heavily favoured KCG. Missing captain Jordan Ashton – stuck in the Trang airport – things looked grim for Siam Mandalay early and got worse as KCG took a 2-0 lead heading into the third period on goals by Jan Isaksson and Mel Dhiranusonkit.

Patrick Forstner started the Siam Mandalay comeback early in the third period with assists going to Yean Thanakroekkriat and Non Aekkasemnarong. And then Siam Mandalay’s infamous Crash Line (Darius Konotopetz, Mitch Morrison and Turner Johnson) put it into high gear. They just kept banging and plugging away creating havoc and scoring chances. Konotopetz tied the game up from Yean with 1:16 left in regulation time. Then in a thrilling 3-on-3 four minute OT stanza Turner Johnson scored the winner on a spinorama move with 58 seconds left in OT as his teammates jumped the boards and swarmed him, celebrating their second victory of the year. Johnson earned himself the Jerky Monster play-of-the-week award for the second time this year.

KCG’s Mel Dhiranusonkit was PoG in a losing cause.

Another one of Siam Mandalay’s Bam Bam Brothers, Ernesto Bauer found himself ejected with a game misconduct halfway through the third period frankly for just being Ernesto.

The Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game went to KCG defenseman Mel Dhiranusonkit, who had an outstanding night at both ends of the ice as he scored KCG’s second goal and made a number of key defensive plays. Leo Liao made 27 saves in the KCG net, while Dream Ungkulpattanasuk made 16 saves earning the victory in the Siam Mandalay goal.

Siam Mandalay’s Turner Johnson, who score the GWG, checks KCG’s Jan Isaksson.

The night’s other match wasn’t nearly as close as the Novotel Spitfires won their seventh straight victory 7-3 over Aware. Novotel jumped into a 5-0 after two periods on single goals by Ken Kibdborn, Tomas Stastny, captain Mike Freeson and two markers by Major Ingkharratphithakon.

Aware then staged a comeback reminiscent of their classic OT victory the week before as Masato Kitayama and Brandon Vick scored to narrow the lead to 5-2. But Novotel captain Freeson rallied his troops as he and Major scored within three minutes of each other restoring Novotel’s five-goal lead. Aware’s Peam Jaratwuttipreeda scored the final Aware goal with ten seconds left in the game.

Novotel’s Major Ingkharratphithakon won player of the game honors.

With a five-point night Tomas Stastny continued to impress and easily could have been the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game but that honour went to Thai left winger Major (2Gs. 1A) who speed was very apparent as he was all the ice like a waterbug.

Lance Parker facing his old teammates for the first time stopped 24 shots in the loss while Ben Kleineschay continued his stellar play stopping 27 of the 30 shots he faced.

The last set of SHL games in 2020 will be played at the Imperial Samrong arena on December 13th with Aware taking on KCG at 9pm and Siam Mandalay facing off against Novotel at 10pm. After that, the league breaks until January 10th.

Novotel’s Tomas Stastny had one goal & four assists on the night.

Aware finally wins in thrilling shoot-out

The sixth week of the Siam Hockey League started with what has to be the most exciting game of the season. Aware, winless in their first five games, was looking for just about anything to give them the push they needed to get their first win of the campaign, and Siam Mandalay was looking to get their second win of the year, against the club they gained their only victory.

Aware had to be looking skyward and wondering what was going on when less than a minute into the contest, Siam Mandalay sniper Patrick Forstner found the back of the net from a sharp angle.

Siam Mandalay’s Darius Konotopetz shields the puck from Aware’s Arnold Vattanapanyakul.

Most fans probably thought Aware would start to doubt themselves after that quick goal, however, the Aware squad seemed to find another gear they had been missing this season, and their first strike required a little “puck luck”, another thing Aware players had said they sorely needed. Aware captain Justin St. Denis gave the puck to Brandon Vick, who fired it on net. The puck ricochet off of both Aware pivot John Schachnovsky and Siam Mandalay captain Jordan Ashton, before making its way past Siam Mandalay goalie Dream Ungkulpattanasuk, to tie the game at one. After this tally, Aware really poured it on. Roger Promthomng kept his rookie-of-the-year caliber campaign going strong with a nifty goal after a feed from Arnold Vattanapanyakul. It looked like Aware would go into the first intermission up 2-1, when St. Denis gave the puck to Schachnovsky at the Siam Mandalay blue line. Schachnovsky saw Vick streaking to the net, and with one second remaining, passed to Vick, who redirected the puck over Dream’s shoulder: 3-1 Aware going into period two.

The second period began how the first ended, with Aware making the score 4-1 with only a couple of minutes gone by, when Roger picked up his second of the game with the assist going to super-sub Phu Suwachirat. Siam Mandalay got one back, making the score 4-2, when Ashton teamed up with pesky forward Ernesto Bauer for a grinding goal. Only a minute or so had passed when Devin Keer dished the puck to veteran sub Mike White. White tossed a nice backhand on net, with Schachnovsky tipping the biscuit passed Dream for his second tally of the night. Mitch Morrison kept Siam Mandalay close with a great shot passed Aware netminder Lance Parker, with assists going to Darius Konotopetz and Mike Wilson. The second period ended with Aware still in control 6-3.

Early in the third period, Arnold gave Aware their four-goal lead once again when he took a pass from David Boere and sniped it by Dream. But then, the game turned on its head. Siam Mandalay stormed back, scoring three goals in three minutes. Goals by Forstner, Wilson and Tan Limpinphet came in rapid succession as Siam Mandalay pure on the offense and Aware didn’t know what hit them. Assists on those three lamp-lighters were from Tan, Jordan, Ernesto, Homme Thaiyanont, and Patrick.

Siam Mandalay’s Patrick Forstner had a four-point night.

For the final 10 minuets, Siam Mandalay tried to get the equalizer and Aware tried feverishly to keep the lead. When Jaren Folden went to the penalty box with only a couple of minutes remaining, Siam Mandalay knew they had a chance, and with under a minute to play, Siam Mandalay got the equalizer, with Non Aekkasemnarong getting the important tally, with assists from Wilson and Patrick.

The three-on-three overtime was a fast-paced affair, but neither team could score. So, it went to a shootout. Round after round came and went with Dream and Lance standing tall each and every time. Finally, first-year standout defenseman Denis Omelka ended the game with the only goal of the shootout, also earning himself the Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game award. Dream had 18 saves in the losing effort and winning goalie Parker had 27.

In game two, undefeated Novotel seemed to be ripe for the picking and maybe pick up their first loss of the season when they went up against the suddenly red-hot KCG squad. Behind captain Harrison Oztemel and new sensation Jan Isaksson, KCG looked across the ice and also saw no Ken Kindborn in the lineup and must have liked their chances (Kindborn suffered an injury playing in a tournament earlier that weekend).

Novotel captain Mike Freeson (in blue) had a hard trick on the night.

And about five minutes into the game, KCG seemed to be on that path, when flashy rookie Time Phatigulsate eamed up with his Thai national teammates Mel Thanyalapark and Punn Phasukkjwatana to make the score 1-0. The first period ended with KCG holding that same lead.

If KCG felt this was their night, and the score was heading in that direction, then waking up Novotel captain Mike Freeson was a bad idea. The captain took his team and plopped them firmly on his shoulders and carried them from there.

A minute into period two, Phu Suwachirat (subbing in his second game of the night) gave the puck to Freeson who found a streaking Mangkorn. The fleet-footed Thai made an amazing individual effort and got the crown on their feet to tie the game at one. That play ended up earning Mangkorn the Jerky Monster play-of-the-week award.

Novotel’s Major Ingkharratphithakon and KCG’s Jan Isaksson wait for the puck to head their way,

Then the Mike Freeson show really began. Freeson scored the next three goals for Novotel, two in the second frame and one in the third with Leo out of the KCG net for an added skater. Assists on his hat-trick of goals went to Mangkorn and Ed Mcconnell

The Rolling Stone Pizza player-of-the-game went to rookie goalie Ben Kleineschay, as he outshined last year’s player-of-the-year goaltender by making 35 saves. If not for his play, KCG would have surely put more than one on the scoreboard as KCG offensive powers Jesse Starosta, Oztemel and Isaksson all had multiple scoring chances at the Novotel net, but all came up empty-handed. Leo made 28 saves in the losing effort.

With only one game on the SHL docket in December, next week’s games are one of only two more sets of games in 2020. So, if you haven’t made it to the Imperial Samrong ice rink yet this season, please do to catch the fastest game on ice. Aware takes on Novotel at 9pm while Siam Mandalay faces off against KCG at 10pm.
